Unknown. Some derive it from সংস্কৃত वकद्वीप (ৱকদ্ৱীপ, literally “crane-island”), a compound of वक (ৱক) + द्वीप (দ্ৱীপ), but Chatterji claims this to be phonologically inadmissible. Chatterji inconclusively suggests the potential derivation of সংস্কৃত व्याघ्रतटी (ৱ্যাঘ্রতটী, literally “tiger-coast”), a compound of व्याघ्र (ৱ্যাঘ্র) + तटी (তটী); such a word would have gone through the hypothetical medial phases of প্রাকৃত *𑀯𑀕𑁆𑀖𑀅𑀟𑀻 (*ৱগ্ঘঅডী), মাগধী প্রাকৃত *𑀩𑀸𑀖𑀯𑀟𑀻 (*বাঘৱডী), and প্রাচীন বাংলা *বাঘডী, ultimately deaspirating in মধ্যযুগীয় বাংলা *বাগডী।[১]
