शिव

According to the Uṇādi-sūtra i, 153, from verbal root शी (শী, “to lie down”), from প্রত্ন-ইন্দো-ইউরোপীয় *ḱey-. Alternatively from श्वि (শ্ৱি, “to swell”), from প্রত্ন-ইন্দো-ইউরোপীয় *ḱewh₁-; compare शवस् (শৱস্, “strength, superiority”), सु-शिश्वि (সু-শিশ্ৱি, “growing well”); cognate with গ্রিক κύριος (kúrios, “lord”).

An earlier deity, रुद्र (রুদ্র, “Rudra”), was often described with the adjective शिव (śivá, “auspicious”)]. शिव-रुद्र (শিৱ-রুদ্র) was eventually shortened to शिव (শিৱ) in later সংস্কৃত, the name of the deity worshipped today.
