According to some, the word is a corruption of সংস্কৃত তণ্ডুল (taṇḍula) via তাঁড়ুল > তাঁউল > চাঁউল; further contracted forms, according to this hypothesis, include চাল.[১] Another explanation is that it is corruption of চালনী (“sieve”), from সংস্কৃত चालनी (চালনী) (< चल् (চল্, “move”)).[২]
