বাগেরহাট
বাংলা
সম্পাদনাব্যুৎপত্তি
সম্পাদনাThe name is compounded from two elements, the second of which is হাট (haṭ, “market”), since the city was named after a market. The first element is disputed; there are many possibilities about the origin of the name:[১]
- a corruption of বাঘেরহাট (bagherhaṭ), a compound of বাঘ (bagh, “tiger”) + -এর (-er, “of”) + হাট (haṭ, “market”), since the Sundarbans are located near it, where many tigers used to live in the past.
- a corruption of বাকেরহাট (bakerhaṭ), a compound of বাকের (baker) + হাট (haṭ), with the first element from আরবি بَاقِر (bāqir, “opener”), referring to a former Muslim ruler of the region, possibly Bakir Khan or Mirza Agha Baqer, after whom the nearby বাকেরগঞ্জ (bakergonj) town was named.
- a compound of বাগ (bag, “garden”) + -এর (-er) + হাট (haṭ), named after a garden near the market which was built by Khan Jahan Ali, a former ruler of the region.
- a corruption of বাঁকেরহাট (bãkerhaṭ), a compound of বাঁক (bãk, “bend”) + -এর (-er) + হাট (haṭ), since the market was established near the bend of a river.
