From Middle Irish Aengus, Oengus, from Old Irish Oíngus, from oín (“one”), from প্রত্ন-Celtic *oinos, from প্রত্ন-ইন্দো-ইউরোপীয় *óynos (“single, one”). The etymology of the second element is disputed; most likely it is gus (“strength, vigour”), from প্রত্ন-Celtic *gustus, or it may be from প্রত্ন-ইন্দো-ইউরোপীয় *ǵews- (“choose”).
